There is that old joke about taking away a Deadhead's drugs and they are no longer a Deadhead....

I saw Furthur 3/2/10. The 1st half of the 1st set seemed just ok to me. There was this super nice person in front of me that kept passing me a joint. All of a sudden the band was awesome.

I listened to the copy of the show avaialable here, and there is no "awesome" - it's just ok.

Many, many Grateful Dead shows are awesome without any chemicals.

Couldn't agree more with REVIEWR's commments regarding drugs & music.

I often wonder if fans would love the music of certain bands on the scene today (not gonna' name names) were they not dosed/high/rolling whatever.

I was at that show.

Idk how anyone could say further is less creative than the dead were with their set lists. Further is far more creative.

I like further, but it's not the dead. It's a good time and they make some good music. It's great for a young person like myself who never got to see the dead. 3/3 was great and a bit better than the night before. Though I got a ticket for selling art on 3/3

Some of the post-Jerry incarnations are better than others, but I haven't been super impressed with any of them and really don't even keep up with them much anymore. And like some other folks have expressed, I do wish they'd shown the same creativity with their setlists while Garcia was still on the scene.

As much as I loved Jerry, I hate to say this. There may have been a chance that he didn't want to play some of the more obscure and/or difficult songs when he was around. Wallowing deeply in his addiction(s) and health issues by the late 80's and into the early 90's, he may have just wanted to keep to what he remembered and possibly felt was easiest to play.

I can't stand Furthur. All of a sudden they play the songs we all wished the dead would play but didn't. I used to go into shows and be like come on maybe a darkstar tonight (my wish came true 10/9/89) but St. Stephen, alligator, and violla lee blues to name a few. So to start bringing them out one pisses me off. I toured from 87 to 94. Walked out of the last show on he boston garden show in 94, and I was like fuck this..I'm done. I felt like everything was a joke. The music was no longer there, the people gate crashing, the scene had changed, and people were selling bogus shit on shakedown street. So for me I'll stick with my dead a how collection any day than go see Furthur...peace and B wild.....mike

yea Jerry has remarked before that he (and others) would rather do a new song than rehash an old one. He used viola as an example of a song that ran its course and was played to death. I also wish they would've brought back those great old tunes. But what can ya do.

Had the band lineup been Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann, Hornsby, Marsalis...

That would be fantastic however Chimenti really is the perfect fit imo. I greatly prefer his jazzy piano playing over Hornsby.

and i nominate Stu Allen to replace JK

I like 'em. I have no problems understanding that they are not the Grateful Dead, nor are they trying to be the Grateful Dead.

Your mileage might vary.

And even on a bad day they are light years beyond L'il Wayne.

"I like 'em. I have no problems understanding that they are not the Grateful Dead, nor are they trying to be the Grateful Dead."

I was trying to think of something as simple as that.
Thx Mando, my thoughts exactly.

The last time I saw them was Red, White & Boom:
(here is the LIG that synced up with the fireworks.
Not the best footage, but you get the idea. You can
look around for more):

Absolutely mind blowing...

Cant wait to see them on 11/16 with 14th row floor seats
for 50 bucks!!!!

edit~ here is some more (KSM) from the 7/2/10 show. Again,
not the best shots, but there is no better 'side show' to
any concert I've ever seen:
